Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a crucial period in which physical, psychological, and social changes occur that can affect psychological well-being. Peer social support is one of the protective factors that help adolescents cope with various developmental demands and maintain mental health.
Purpose: This study aims to analyze the relationship between peer social support and psychological well-being in adolescents in Malang Raya.
Methods: This quantitative correlational study employed a cross-sectional design involving 264 adolescents aged 11–23 years enrolled in formal education, residing in Greater Malang (Malang City, Malang Regency, or Batu City), and willing to participate. Participants were recruited from junior high schools and vocational high schools using simple random sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Indonesian versions of the Peer Support Questionnaire (PSQ) and Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation test.
Results: The results showed that adolescents had relatively good levels of peer social support (77.36 ± 18.06) and psychological well-being (95.99 ± 13.17). Informational support is the highest average social support dimension, while personal growth is the most dominant psychological welfare dimension. Pearson's analysis showed a significant positive relationship between peer social support and psychological well-being (r = 0.487; p < 0.001). These findings show that the higher the social support that adolescents receive from their peers, the higher the level of psychological well-being they have.
Conclusion: Higher peer social support was associated with better psychological well-being among adolescents, highlighting the importance of peer-support programs in adolescent mental health nursing practice.
